The title Search for Meaning is to be understood in two senses corresponding to the two-fold intention of this book. First, it points to religious traditions as the expression of a human impulse to discover and affirm a meaningful world in which to live. Secondly, the title characterizes the study of religion as an empathic quest to comprehend the religious devotees' world-and-value views and their efforts to appropriate and live according to them.
The Hindu tradition is not concerned to promulgate a single system of spiritual deliverance. There is one ultimate reality, variously conceived, but the ways to that one ultimate reality are multiform, according to the individual peculiarities of one's nature.
