1950s Quebec: a shy sixteen-year-old in a Catholic boarding school for
prospective schoolteachers falls in love with a classmate. When the
fantasized relationship fails, she takes superficial refuge with a group of
girls, and learns how alone she is, how alone and closed off they all are.

Recognized as one of the important Quebec feminist writers, France Théoret was born in Montreal. She holds a doctorate in French from the University of Sherbrooke. After having taught for nineteen years at the Cegep level, she now concentrates full-time on her writing. She has published nine books, including a novel and a volume of essays. Guernica published The Tangible Word in 1991.

Luise von Flotow is a translator of various Quebecois authors. She lives in Ottawa.
