Émile Nelligan was born in 1879. His poetic career spans a meager two years, from 1897 to 1899.

In 1899 he suffered a nervous disorder which was later described as dementia praecox.

Until his death in 1941, Nelligan lived in a state of remote indifference. Émile Nelligan was the first Canadian writer to be influenced by Baudelaire and Rimbaud.
