Fall/Winter 2004

Guernica was at Word on the Street 2004 on September 26 in Queen's Park in Toronto.

Summer 2004

Guernica author Halli Villegas read at the Stephen Leacock Festival in Orillia, Ontario on July 22 as well as at the Oakville"Voices against violence" event at Paradiso Restaurant on July 26. Publisher Antonio D'Alfonso read on August 5th at the Victory Cafe

May 2004

April 2004

Guernica Editions participated in the Great Ontario Book Break. The OBPO, in conjunction with an advisory group of publishers and the OMDC, organized an exciting weekend event to celebrate Ontario books. The Great Ontario Book Break (think of an English Salon de Livre) was held at the York Quay Building at Harbourfront in Toronto from Friday, April 2nd to Sunday, April 4th.

Friday April 30th Halli Villegas will again be touring the high schools in Orillia to talk about her work and poetry. There will be an evening reading at the Leacock House, starting at six o clock.

On Sunday, December 14, 2003,Guernica Editions held a launch/reading for At the Moonbean Cafe by Malca Litovitz, Borrowed Light by Merle Nudelman, Mask by Elana Wolff and Song for My Father by Miriam Packer


November 2003

Guernica authors Malca Litovitz (At the Moonbean Cafe), Karen Shenfield (The Law of Return) and Merle Nudleman (Borrowed Light) read at the Jewish Book Fair on Sunday, November 9th at 11:00 a.m. in the Leah Posluns Theatre at the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre, 4588 Bathurst St., Toronto.


June 2003

On June 26, Guernica held a launch of new Spring/Summer titles at Bar Italia. The event featured readings by the authors and also actress Jennifer Dale. The following titles were launched:
In Green by Robin Blackburn, Italian Women Poets by Biancamaria Frabotta, Editor (Translated by Corrado Federici), Blessed Harbours: An Anthology of Hungarian-Canadian Authors by John Miska, Editor, Italian Shoes by F. G. Paci, Selected Poems by Albino Pierro (Translated by Luigi Bonaffini), The Bob Dylan Albums by Anthony Varesi

On June 8, Guernica Editions celebrated its 25th Anniversary of publishing success - Antonio D'Alfonso founder, editor and, author has published over three hundred titles and five hundred authors from around the world. Guernica Editions, founded in l978, is a unique experience in world literature publishing new and established literary voices from Canada, the United States, and Europe. Many Guernica authors have won critical praise and literary awards including the Governor General's Award, the Atlantic Poetry Prize, the Milton Acorn People's Poetry Award and the Bressani Award. Guernica is supported in its work of broadcasting the messages of Canada's many cultural voices, by the Canada Council of the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Book Publishing Industry Development Programme. The official celebration took place on Sunday June 8th, 2003 at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto.


April 2003

Julie Roorda (Eleventh Toe) and Gianna Patriarca (Ciao Baby) were invited to participate in Poetry College. They both gave readings to an appreciative audience.

Halli Villegas (Red Promises) was invited to discuss poetry and read her own work to high school students in Orillia by Fred Addis of the Stephen Leacock museum. She also did a public reading that evening at the museum that was attended by the Orillia literary community.

Guernica author Daniel Sloate (Of Dissonance and Shadows, Lydia Thrippe, The Countess Plays) was invited to read at the Toronto Public Library Reading Series along with George Elliott Clarke, Billie Livingstone, and Kimmy Beach. He read from his collected works, Of Dissonance and Shadows and was well-received by an attentive audience.


March 2003

Fulvio Caccia, another Guernica author (Republic Denied, Aknos and Other Poems) read from his collected works at the Italian Cultural Institute on March 20. Julie Roorda and Halli Villegas, both Guernica poets, also read from Caccia’s work as part of a conference on Writing Italy Outside of Italy. Caccia’s works sparked lively discussion throughout the conference.

On March 17, Guernica Editions launched Republic Denied, Isabelle’s Notebooks, The Holy Land, at Bar Italia. The afternoon included a reading by actor Jennifer Dale and live music by Jenny Robinson.


January 2003
