About Guernica
(en francais)

People often ask us “Why Guernica?”

On Monday, April 26th, 1937, the bells of Santa Maria tolled, warning of the inhumane aerial raid that would reduce the Spanish city of Guernica into ruins. Men, women, children and animals were destroyed under the weight of the fiery nationalist bombs. Picasso immortalized the victims of this terrible moment in history with his painting Guernica and the image has become a plea for peace. We named our press Guernica with the hope that the books we publish will make this world a better place in which to live and love.

Established in 1978, we have published over three hundred titles and five hundred authors from around the world.

Guernica is grateful to the Canada Council of the Arts, the Ontario Arts council, and the Book Publishing Industry Development Program, for their financial assistance throughout the years. Without their support Canada’s cultures would remain silent and Guernica's message go unheard.

Guernica, a unique experience in world literature, will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2003.
